MMA News: Fedor Emelianenko vs Fabricio Werdum Pushed Back To May

M1-Global held a press conference
today headed by company president Vadim Finklestein where he announced that a bout between the world’s top ranked heavyweight fighter Fedor ‘The Last Emperor’ Emelianenko (32-1-0) and top Brazilian heavyweight Fabricio Werdum (13-4-1) has been rescheduled to sometime in May. Unfortunately a rough translation from the original Russian article does not offer any additional details, but a statement from Strikeforce is expected to follow in the near future now that the main event has been canceled for their anticipated April 24th event.Strikeforce definitely has enough talent to proceed with the event as it was just announced that Dan ‘Hollywood’ Henderson (25-7-0) would be taking on current champion Jake Shields (24-4-1) for the middleweight strap at the April event which is also expected to feature fan favorite Gina Carano (7-1-0) taking on a fighter yet to be named, along with Gegard ‘The Dreamcatcher’ Mousasi (28-2-1) defending his light heavyweight title against the undefeated Mohammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal (6-0-0). Though no official announcement has been made it would seem that Strikeforce believes they can double-down by splitting this monster card into two events, perhaps moving one of the championship bouts back to the May date alongside Fedor/Fabricio to balance out the top action. With less than two months remaining until the expected April 24th event Strikeforce has been surprisingly quiet about the event details as the entire focus of the promotion seems to be on tomorrow night’s CHALLENGERS event that provides a forum for up-and-coming talent to gain national exposure very similar to UFC’s Fight Night format. FightScoops is awaiting a response from the Strikeforce media representative that will hopefully provide some answers to the many questions surrounding these events.
